Hi

I had my consultant appointment today & I mentioned again about my elbows. They are constantly swollen and i am unable to straighten my arms. My consultant was running late and i felt my appointment was rushed, but saying that, he has increased my MTX, gave me some Voltoral gel and I had an X-ray which was very painful as i can not straighten my arms fully. Now I have to wait 6-8 weeks to have an MRI scan. So i shouldn't really moan as i did seem to get a lot done!

But i just wondered if anyone else has similar problems and is there anything they do that they find helps? I really want to start going swimming and i really should try to lose some weight but i just want to comfort eat all the time!

Hello, I have had quite a lot of trouble with elbows in the past, swollen and inflamed, I had bursa on my right elbow, but thankfully that has dispersed again now. With better control of my R.A. so my elbows have improved too. I still cannot straighten my arms properly, and there is still swelling but they are much better. Hopefully with the increase in mtx, your inflamation will improve and with that your arms should straighten better. I'm just wondering if you have tried applying hot or cold packs, it can help. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Lou

My elbows were very sore til the RA became under control, my arms, wrists and hands were always the worst affected overall. I ve not picked up on anyone talking about elbows but I m sure someone will come to your rescue. It sounds very painful indeed, I can imagine the x ray on them was pretty awful, from experience too the medical staff have no understanding how painful it is to have them done, doesn t help. I hope all goes well with the MRI scan and can find out what is going on with them.

Julia xx

PS Zena has now posted, just beat me Smile

I suffer with my elbows too. Luckily I can bend and straighten them if I move slowly, but by evening times I cant rest my arms as the pain goes from elbows down my arm to my wrists, hands and fingers. When I mentioned this to my Nurse specialist he said I might have tennis elbow. However, I am hoping that once my RA is better controlled this will be a symptom that improves - like Zena and Julia found.

Hope the scan provides some answers for you.

Hi Louise - I'm also having trouble with my elbows and can't straighten them - I think it's the RA and am hoping that MTX will control inflammation in due course. Going to the pool sounds like a good idea - I'm not a great swimmer but I used to go to Aquafit classes every week (sometimes twice per week) and that was when my RA was at its worst before diagnosis, and I found it really helped. The water was especially cooling on my joints, plus it was a laugh so good for soul too! I must confess that I haven't been for a couple of months because I've been on steroids, which has helped massively with my pain and inflammation - so much so that I've been busy doing other stuff (like long-overdue housework) and haven't found time to go to classes. You've reminded me how much fun it was so I think I'll restart and persuade my daughter to come too - we need more laughs!

Mine started on the right side years ago and in the last 6/7 years the left one has gone wrong, I cannot straighten either.
Hot and cold treatments are key to relief - the gels are very sniffed at at the drs here, basically the rubbing in helps as much as the actual gel!
There are other things to try
I'd ask for hydro therapy
Also learning the full rotation exercises like walking your hand up a wall and doing them daily is a wise move (physio can teach this)
Joint conservation techniques are handy too.

Basically as the joint is going wrong you want it to go wrong in a useful position!
Having ultrasound guided steroid injections can help short term
You get some places that can do manipulation if under anaesthetic
Or there are operations where they take the bones and take some away so the joint moves more freely.

I've met a few people with elbow replacements but you dont hear of them as much as i used to, not sure why this is- or if the people I know who needed them have had them!

Hope it eases up soon

Love
